Faculty profile: Sarah Kameron

What she teaches: Pre-K the past two years. Starts Kindergarten this fall.

Years at Prep: Just completed her 4th year overall (2nd at Prep).

Education: Georgia Southern University.
Background: Sarah grew up in Augusta (raised "by 2 wonderful parents," she said). She's the middle child, sandwiched between 2 brothers. She has 3 dogs (Lily is the family dog, Lake and Tito live with her.)

How she got into teaching: "I took an alternate route to get to where I am. In college, I thought my career path was going to be family services or adoption. During my senior year I did an internship in Atlanta with Lutheran Services of Georgia working with refugees. I fell in love with a Syrian family, and really enjoyed working with their 4-year-old daughter. I loved teaching her English and playing games with her. However, I did not love the paperwork and administrative side of the job. I wanted to find a job where my main responsibility was working with children.
"I moved back to Augusta and took a job at a preschool as a Pre-K assistant teacher. I felt right at home in the classroom with the children. I always have this drive to do more, so I did a brief stint as assistant director of the preschool, but my heart was still in the classroom."

How she found Prep: "Growing up in Augusta, I always heard the best things about Augusta Prep. Coming from another private school, I remember thinking 'Prep kids are so smart'. The reputation for excellence really pulled me in. I also loved the idea that I could watch the Lower School students grow all the way to their senior year. I reached out to Julianne (Ingram, Head of Lower School) and had an interview with some of the most amazing teachers, and the rest is history!"

What she enjoys about Prep: "I love the people I work with. Everyone has each other's back and really tries to get to know one another. I can walk into anyone’s classroom with a question, knowing they will stop what they are doing to help me out. It’s a really fun working environment."

What excites her about teaching up a grade this fall: "I look forward to watching our current Pre-K students continue to grow. I’m excited to use my talents to teach at a slightly higher caliber and to learn from Mrs. (Sarah) Hunt. I think Kindergarten is such a fun opportunity to be one of a child’s first teachers, to instill a love for learning in kiddos that they will take with them through their educational career."

Hobbies: Cooking, Spending time at her parents' Tiki Hut, Playing kickball in a local league ("Our team is 0-5, but it is so much fun.")
