At Augusta Prep, our students begin learning art in the Lower School and continue learning different art forms throughout their Prep education.
Art in the Lower School is outstanding! Hands-on, process-driven, and full of creativity, art is the highlight of many students’ Lower School experience. The art program emphasizes the development of artistic skills, knowledge, and creativity in a variety of media and techniques including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. The elements of art and principles of design, including line, shape, color, form, texture, repetition, variety, and unity, are taught. Lower School art classes, taught by Chad Cole, occur weekly beginning in kindergarten and are incorporated daily in the preschool and prekindergarten classrooms. Multi-faceted projects are designed to demonstrate artistic processes and mastery in both two and three-dimensional form. Art history, different genres and artists, and interdisciplinary, culturally themed units round out the art curriculum.
In the Middle School and Upper School, students have the opportunity to create 2D Art, 3D Art and Ceramics at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced level. The MS/US art program emphasizes the development of skills, knowledge, and creativity in a variety of media and techniques including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. The US students also have the opportunity to learn about Art History and how art and architecture have shaped and reflected the history of the world.
These are popular electives taught by Fine Arts Department Chair Tara Chokshi, LS/MS Studio Arts Teacher Chad Cole, and MS/US Ceramics and Studio Art teacher Eric Miller.
