Augusta Prep wins boys varsity basketball region championship

Augusta Prep added another trophy to the case when the boys varsity basketball team defeated Gatewood in overtime Friday.
The Cavaliers won their third region championship in school history, first since 2014. Senior Ben Monnig, who was honored before the contest after scoring his 1,000th career point in the region semifinals, drove to the basket for a layup to give Augusta Prep the lead in overtime. Will Monnig, Elijah McFadgen and Charles Connell each added free throws as the Cavaliers held on for a 49-44 victory.

Augusta Prep will play host to Monsignor Donovan in the first round of the state tournament at 7 p.m., Wednesday, in the Boardman Athletic Center.
