Augusta Prep hires Hunnicutt to become Head Football Coach for 2025-26

Augusta Prep is proud to announce the hiring of Phelps Hunnicutt as its new head football coach and physical education teacher for the 2025-2026 school year.
Hunnicutt becomes the third head football coach in school history. He replaces Todd Booker, who led the program the past three years. Coach Booker will remain at Augusta Prep as a Middle School physical education teacher and head baseball coach.

The 26-year-old Hunnicutt, a 2016 Augusta Prep graduate, will also begin work as a full-time Augusta Prep Lower School physical education teacher in the fall. The past five years, he has worked as an assistant football coach under coaches Bacheller and Booker.

“It’s a big honor for me,” Hunnicutt said of becoming the next Augusta Prep head coach. “There’s a reason I’ve stuck around here for five years. There’s something special that can be done here, and I’m a firm believer of Prep’s ability to get to where we want to be football-wise.”

Hunnicutt played four years of football at Episcopal Day School before coming to Augusta Prep for high school. He played four years for Coach Bacheller, before accepting an offer to play college football at Sewanee: The University of the South. In his first two years at Sewanee, he played on the defensive line before switching to center for his last two years.

Hunnicutt returned to Augusta Prep in 2020 as an assistant coach. He worked for two years under Coach Bacheller before working the past three years as an assistant coach for Coach Booker.

“I think the big thing I learned from both coaches, especially with them being older, experienced coaches, is how to command a team,” Hunnicutt said. “I learned under Harry how to develop that sense of family and what it takes to really bond the kids together. Under Coach Booker, he showed me more about more modern football and what other teams in our area are doing and what we need to do to match that and succeed past that.”

As an alum, Hunnicutt said he wants to get more Augusta Prep alumni involvement with the football program. He also said he wants more student-athletes walking the hallways to support the team by participating in football. One of the biggest assets he brings is understanding the ins and outs of Augusta Prep.

“My experience as an alum is going to play a big factor,” Hunnicutt said. “I understand the student experience here. There’s a reason Augusta Prep is ranked the No. 1 academic school in the area. I’ll really be able to help balance that student-athlete life and make sure we’re succeeding in the classroom first, with success on the field coming right after it.”
